Konshens - Bring Back The Reggae
Konshens, an upcoming dancehall singer has already told us that he's Addicted to Music. But now he's getting a little more specific, calling for a return to the "old time reggae" over a horn-driven 90s style rhythm track with a live feel:
MP3: Konshens - Bring Back The Reggae
It's slightly unclear exactly what Konshens is advocating though, given that he bigs up today's top artists alongside the heroes of yesteryear.
Still, I kind of know what he means. In the ten years I've been listening to dancehall I've always dismissed people saying, "it was better back in the day" as mere nostalgia.
But recently I'm not so sure and have even found myself thinking the same thing! As much as I love a lot of up to the time bashment, I sometimes feel like something's missing...

From the vaults: Blak Twang & Jah Mali - Who Seh Me Rotton (The Heatwave Refix)
Another previously unreleased remix by Henry Heatwave that I've dug out for your listening and downloading pleasure.
This one blends Blak Twang's UK hip hop/reggae anthem So Rotton, featuring Jamaican singer Jah Mali, with the Bam Bam riddim used by Cutty Ranks on Who Seh Me Dun:

To hear more of Blak Twang doing his dancehall thing, check out his live appearance at our Heatwave vs Mas Fuego night back in in 2006 when he rapped over riddims like Filthy, Answer, Real Rock and Sleng Teng.

Dancehall links: Amen Brother
Everybody has heard the Amen break in one form or another ever since it was first sampled in the 1980s, but what about the rest of the Winstons track it came from, Amen Brother?
Amen, the gospel standard recorded by Otis Redding in 1968 (a year before Amen Brother) and sung by countless gospel choirs before and since, forms the basis for the Winstons instrumental.
But my favorite rendition has to be Spirit by Chaka Demus on the Lecturer riddim:
