Mutabaruka at Bernie Grant Arts Centre
The Bernie Grant Arts Centre in Tottenham, named after the late Labour MP for the area and recently opened, presumably to coincide with Black History Month, looks like it'll be a welcome addition to the London music and arts circuit. The David Adjaye-designed building, café and exhibition spaces certainly would've been a welcome addition to my lunch breaks when I worked literally next door a couple of years ago!
Tonight, Wednesday 17th October, sees Jamaican dub poet and radio host Mutabaruka (pictured) performing and in conversation, and other upcoming events include Speakers Corner, featuring performances from rapper Skinnyman, human beatboxer Mad Flow and spoken word artist Malika Booker. Check the website for more info.

Riko Dan bashment PA this Friday
This Friday at The Pool we're pleased to be joined for the third time in the last couple of years by one of our favourite English MCs of all time, Riko Dan. Riko may be part of Wiley's Roll Deep Entourage but his styles go far beyond grime: he's a veteran of the 90s jungle/drum'n'bass scene and was a member of garage cartel Pay As U Go.
But it's the strong dancehall/bashment influence on Riko's flow that we love, and what made his first performance alongside us in April 2005 electrifying. Though in January 2006 his set with Gods Gift was dogged by technical problems, he still tore down the Rhythm Factory, and we fully expect him to destroy The Pool in a similar fashion!
As featured in Time Out and The London Paper. This event is not to be missed - and it's FREE to get in! For all the details on the night, check out the events section.

Recording of Riko’s recent set at The Pool
So Riko's set at October's Heatwave Affair was wicked, he hosted the dance for over an hour as well as vocalling a bunch of bashment and grime riddims.
You can listen to the live recording and see the photos here, and we also recorded a minute-long (but annoyingly dark) video of him MCing while I mixed the Applause riddim into Calabria 2007:
