A longstanding love of reggae was shaped by various experiences into Gervase's DJing and promoting work as part of The Heatwave. Some of these were:
- Getting the vinyl collecting bug at the legendary Peckings record shop near where he grew up in West London
- Travelling round Europe with and DJing on a massive Thunder Ridge sound system
- Attending the weekly reggae dance in the Cowley Road community centre in Oxford while at university
- Buying, listening to and generally loving UK rap and reggae in all its forms
- Attending the Notting Hill Carnival since the heyday of jungle in the mid 90s
